The National Telephone Kiosk Collection & Telephone Museum

The National Telephone Kiosk Collection at Avoncroft Museum is arguably the UKs most complete telecommunications museum where visitors can get a complete history of the public telephone service with a working telephone network connected to four telephone exchanges and every type of telephone kiosk used from 1912 to the present day. The K6 is the most popular red box first introduced in 1935, although the K2 was the first red box to be introduced, design by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. Police boxes such as the Tardis made famous by Dr Who were used before the introduction of the 999 service to give quick access to the emergency services.

National Motor Museum, Beaulieu
Beaulieu is still a great place to visit.Especially if it's your first time. The cars are fun to see and some of the history as you follow the exhibits is really special. Some downsides are that I feel many areas are due a refresh. Parts of the museum look a little tired. Much of it hasn't changed in decades. In some ways it's nice for personal nostalgia but on the whole, updating is needed. The canteen in my view also needs improving. I felt the food was expensive for what you get, and we were kept waiting a long time.Perhaps a system to separate coffee and hot food, from cold drinks and snacks would help. Also dining area seating was lacking if wet outside.Anyhow, overall, still a very enjoyable place to visit! The grounds are fantastic too as are the staff. Many thanks.

National Trust - Newark Park
Underrated gem of a country estate. Highlights are definitely the views and the walks, the interior of the house is interesting but rather sparse. We were lucky enough to catch it on a clear sunny day when the view was at its best. Definitely worth a visit.

National Mining Museum Scotland
Excellent museum housed at the site of a former mining facility. Don't miss out on the guided tours, as the guides themselves worked at the mine before it was a museum and their knowledge and experience is deep and irreplaceable. If you're interested in Scotland's industrial past or present this is for you.

National Civil War Centre - Newark Museum
Good for the kids, lots for them to do. There was a guy outside dressed up in civil war uniform who was very chatty about the civil war. I enjoyed the history of Newark part in the museum more than the civil war bits.

Big Pit National Coal Museum
Great day out with Grandchildren, very educational for children and adults! The underground exploration of the mine with our very talented young Lady guide was wonderful, the children were enthralled and have been excited to talk about what they saw. A repeat visit is most definitely needed as we still have much more to experience, the time passed so quickly and we are already looking forward to being able to visit again.

National Trust - Monk's House
Visiting this place was one of the most enriching experiences in my life. Visits are pre-booked, which we weren’t aware of as we don’t usually have to check the fees beforehand (National Trust members get free admission). Thankfully, staff was accommodating and it so happened that they had free slots for that day. Everyone manning the site was incredibly warm and friendly. Volunteers really took their time to talk about each of the rooms and tell stories about it. Ask the guides about the green paint on the walls of the drawing room and they will tell a good story about it. What particularly struck me was Virginia Woolf’s bedroom, the portrait of her niece Angelica Garnett hanging on one of its walls and the story of her life, told by the lovely guide. The garden was a vision of beauty, especially on a sunny day.

National Trust - The Children's Country House at Sudbury
Nice place to spend time with the family. I would say the park surrounding the house is probably more interesting than the house itself and provide ample space for picnic or just some leisurely walks. The house itself felt a bit empty and could have been slightly more interactive as to let visitors know more about its rich history. But overall, we’ve spend a lovely afternoon there and will prouve back from time to time.
