The lost Balblair (1) Distillery

Visited in 2002.A few years ago now, but the then manager looked after us very well.A classic whisky.

Our guide was Helen - it turned out, whisky is in the family genes. Her brother was a whisky maker for a large distillery in Orkney Island. The visit starts with a short video about the history of the area and the distillery. The actual tour takes you through every step of the making process as you walk through the rooms and warehouses where the whisky is made and stored (all that while the distillery operates).The tour took much longer than anticipated thanks to Helen's knowledge about all the things surrounding the area history, the actual distillery and the process-making.Originally, we thought about a big distillery in the area, but they were closed. The decision to try the Balblair distillery is the best decision regarding the distillery tours we've made on our trip. To sum it up, if you don't want some mass-tourist tour, but to learn about how whisky is made and see the actual making process, you have to visit this one.

Tasted family owned whiskey. May be oldest distillery in Scotland. People extremely helpful. Bought two bottles of 17 year single cask scotch direct from cask. Bottled in front of you, sealed and then you sign the book and get a numbered label.Wonderful stuff.
