Reading Hydro

One or three few remaining weirs you can actually walk across the Thames now, I believe

One of my favourite places in Reading to while away some time en route to the small but beautiful nature reserve and the Thames.

A large weir almost in the middle of Reading operated by the Environment Agency next door to Caversham Lock. Pedestrians can walk across the River Thames here. It incorporates a salmon ladder to allow salmon to return to their spawning grounds further upstream. During high flows and in the winter when a lot of water is passing through the gates it makes a wonderful thunderous sound.

Reading Hydro is a turbine producing electricity from the force of water head difference between upstream and downstream of the river Thames.The description is clear on the signpost displaying info and history of the Hydro.It’s a beautiful location and an excellent use of the water power. It would be great if it was open to public viewing at certain times of the week to appreciate its importance at first hand.
