I have a good friend living in one of the Guiness Trust sheltered housing flats. I was especially interested in his experience as a tenant because I managed several sheltered housing schemes in London. The building itself is compact with well kept gardens at the back where tenants can sit down on benches or simply walk around. There are just two floors - ground and first floor. A major disadvantage is that the only access to first floor flats is by using the stairs. There is no lift, thus excluding people with mobility problems from living on the first floor. There is a communal laundry room with driers for tenants' use and a common room /meeting room. Flats are one or two bedrooms with adequatelyp sized rooms. The block I visit frequently is nicely situated in a market town in Somerset. It is most regrettable that no lifts have been installed to allow wheelchair access to the flats on the first floor. A scheme manager visits several times a week ad tenants may see her in the office to discuss any concerns they may have. Tenants have to be aged 55 and over as a general rule.
