Bungaroosh walls - rebuild and repairWe couldn’t be happier with the fantastic work on our three traditional Sussex garden walls. They are such a feature of the garden and of the house, that when we finally decided to act and save them from further decay, we knew we should have them faithfully restored using traditional materials and methods.After much web surfing, Anne came across Sussex Flint Brick and Lime, a father and son business run by Louis and his very able and competent son Lawrie.They had a lot of work on when we called but Louis nevertheless scheduled a visit to quote for the job. We not only liked him immediately but he also presented as a credible and knowledgeable craftsman.The quote was similarly credible and realistic, and although we knew there would be a lengthy lead time, we accepted immediately.We wanted to raise the height of one wall by 300mm for which they searched reclamation yards for the closest matching bricks and tiles.They both worked very hard and very diligently and were extremely careful to create as little residual mess as possible. Laying down multiple plastic sheets to protect the flower beds, each night, they also swept the paved areas to collect up any wayward bits of grit and dust.The greatest satisfaction was seeing the quality of the finished lime mortar. We’d had minor repairs done in the past by builders claiming they knew what they were doing, but the mortar work was never right. The finished work looks so authentic that in a hundred years it will no doubt look like the original Edwardian installation.Would we recommend them? Absolutely. Very impressed. These guys are artisans, in the true meaning of the word. It's rare these days that you get anyone working with their hands who have pride in what they do, at least not to this level. Bungaroosh is a unique building material requiring specialist knowledge but Louie et al give me confidence that ours will be around for another 150 years. Our back wall and garden also look fantastic, I'd imagine better than they did when they were first constructed!Photos show before and after.

Our external bungaroosh wall was badly damaged with cracks and blown render, which was causing an internal damp issue. Louis did a brilliant job restoring the wall to its former glory, he was really knowledgeable about bungaroosh and traditional building methods. The damp issue was fully resolved. He was very thorough in his work as well as very polite and personable. Highly recommended!

We asked Louis to repair our flint garden wall. Some of the wall needed a rebuild and some repointing was needed too.He used traditional lime mortar and worked both efficiently and courteously.We were very pleased with the final results and we would have no hesitation in recommending Louis to others needing flint work.

Our garden Flint wall needed a partial rebuild, flints replaced and repointing with lime and Louis at Sussex brick Flint and lime did a brilliant job. A great communicator, excellent workmanship and left our garden tidy. We also asked Louis to take a look at our shower while he was on site and discovered the wall needed repairs and re-tiling due to a leak. He did a brilliant job with this too.

Louis and his team at Sussex Flint Brick & Lime came recommended from a friend in Brighton. They did a very professional job using lime mortar to rebuild and repoint the bungeroosh walls of the attic in our North Laines property. Previously the attic walls had been crumbling and some of the stones fallen out. The walls now look very solid and I sure this will help with the damp so common in old houses in the area. The team worked flat out and in hot conditions last week. They were very skilled and experienced artisans with a pride in their work. Also, very considerate & careful to prevent dust spreading. They really did go beyond the call of duty and I would recommend them highly.

We had Louis and the team with us for two weeks carrying out remedial work to our flint built barn. This involved repointing, removing old cement render and replacing with lime mortar, as well as rebuilding small sections that had become fragile and crumbly. Louis clearly knows his stuff, and is careful to use the correct materials, matching old with new. He is a pleasure to deal with.
