Rhone & Wye Memorial
RMS Rhone was a UK Royal Mail Ship owned by the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company (RMSP). She was wrecked off the coast of Salt Island in the British Virgin Islands on 29 October 1867 in a hurricane, killing 123 people. RMS Wye of the same usage and company was lost in the same hurricane with 65 casualties off the coast of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. The memorial stands today as a testament to the loss of those who died in the tragedy, too many of them who came from Southampton.
