Had wanted to try this place after numerous visits to Edinburgh and this time I'm glad I did. Had the early evening menu. Mushroom and garlic soup was superb. Steak was really nicely done. Good chunky chips too. The apricot cheesecake was also very good.Catered for 2 families well, though I wouldn't go there with kids later on. Dining room isn't great for those with pushchairs, but the helpful waiting staff were great. Will definitely go again without the kids.

I recently booked a surprise 60th birthday meal for my wife and 30+ friends and family. We were given exclusive use of the restaurant which was an ideal size for our party. Gordon and his staff couldn't have been more helpful in the pre-event arrangements and gave exceptional service on the night. The choice of four dishes for each of our three courses was a very reasonable price when you consider that the quality of the meals was second to none. I have received nothing but compliments from my friends and family about their meals. It was a great night of jolliment and story telling and off course sampling of the huge selection of wines. I know my wife thoroughly enjoyed the evening which will last long in her memories I am sure. Thank you Gordon and staff for making it such a memorable occasion. We will see you again soon. Highly Recommended venue.

One of Edinburgh's secrets? Getting to the restaurant isn't nice as it's tucked away behind rubbish bins. You might find yourself with the place to yourself if you go during a quiet time (I'd always recommend booking).Sounds like a shaky start? They've never let me down. The food is always superb, wonderful American style cuisine - by which I mean modern food made by people who care about good food.I generally order the chicken or a steak and mix it up with one of their gorgeous sauces. The service is great, attentive and friendly staff. This is a restaurant that serves posh style and quality food without the evils of posh elitism nonsense that puts me off other restaurant of this quality.

Calistoga really is a hidden gem in Edinburgh. In a back lane from Rose St, which is already a back lane, it's nicely tucked away - but I've never been when it's not busy.Lovely hearty food, always excellent choices on the menu. The last couple of times I've been have been for private dining with a tasting. 4 wines and a 3 course dinner for £33 represents extremely good value and the tasting is always such fun.The owners are lovely, friendly and knowledgable about their wares. You can also buy wine to take away.Highly recommend!

little gem hidden in a back street. The food was delicious. we had the salmon and the seabream (could do with slightly bigger portion for the seabream but it was delicious!) I'd also recommend the chocolate mousse cake. and did I talk about the wine?! we'll definitely be back!

Amazing place! We were there on a big group and the staff were so friendly and helpful. We went for the before dinner guided wine tasting and I can't recommend this highly enough. It's interesting, informative and engaging and a fabulous start to the meal. The food was delicious and not only would I come back here to eat, they are also a wine retailer so I'm definitely going back to buy some wine!

One of the city centre's best kept secrets. You'll need to walk up an uninviting lane, but it'll be well worth it. As others have noted, this is a place that you want to keep to yourself, but can't resist raving about. Service is great, very welcoming; particular without being fussy. It's a Californian restaurant: the dishes are lighter, tastier and more inventive than you might expect from your average American-themed restaurant in Edinburgh. If you enjoy Californian wines, Calistoga pride themselves on their stock and it seems they are regular visitors to the Napa Valley.

We ate here for a family dinner and we were all very impressed. The restaurant is tucked off Rose Street on a little lane but even then it was packed when we visited one Friday night. The food was delicious, I had seared scallops to start with a sweet corn relish (very generous portion for the price and beautifully cooked) then the chicken poached in rosewater and honey as a main. The chicken was lovely was juicy but I didn't get much of the rosewater or honey flavours, I'm sure that may appeal to some people but it was the reason I picked the dish. We shared the flapjack as a desert and it was delicious. So chewy and full of flavour. Overalls great restaurant doing something a little but different.

Wasn't as good as I thought it would be. Limited drinks menu and the steak was rare as opposed to medium as ordered. Steak was also just above warm. Nice restaurant but wouldn't rush back. I can see there are a number of good reviews but most of them are a year or more old.
