My first marketing job was at 99Structural Engineering, and it was truly impactful. Working with John Hurle, I gained valuable insights into residential structural engineering and architecture. John provided the structural calculations for my renovation project in Earlsfield, South-West London.I was very impressed by the service I received. When I first met John I was impressed at the level of knowledge he displayed on medium and large new build structures, on which he extensively worked prior to meeting me. He would always take the time to explain things in a very efficient, understandable and clear way. I then had the pleasure to work on several projects with him, mostly on very bespoke, hi-end refurbishment projects, residential and commercial. We delivered beautiful exposed and efficient structures in a variety of materials (steel, cast iron, timber etc.) and overcame the numerous challenges of working on existing buildings (extending, converting and adding floors onto existing buildings) while working with prize-winning architects. More recently I have worked as a consulting engineer with 99 Structural Engineers Ltd at the start of John's new working adventure. As always it was great working with John to deliver a variety of refurbishment projects, including properties with new basements. He is always kind and calm even when pressure is high and 99 SE is the reflection of John's best abilities and traits.

I worked as a quantity surveyor, alongside John Hurle as structural engineer, on a particularly interesting and demanding scheme. The property was a residential building, separated into a number of apartments , some of which were to be occupied during the works. There were also live communal areas during the works, which had to be taken into consideration.The property had a relatively large central atrium, which was to have a bespoke, structurally glazed roof installed to create an internal space. There were numerous large openings to be created to create larger spaces internally and to provide views/ entrances into the atrium area. Parts of these works also extended underneath public areas (the pavement of a busy street), which also had to be navigated.The nature of the building and its occupants gave rise to numerous challenges, particularly those related to the structural works. John provided practical solutions throughout, whilst also assisting my work in achieving value for the client’s budget. We often discussed numerous solutions to solve one of the many design requirements until we reached something that was achievable, affordable, and aesthetically pleasing. The temporary works was a Contractor Design Portion, but great work had to go into ensuring feasibility regarding the construction and the many associated regulations (CDM and the like) before we had Contractor involvement. John was integral to these early discussions and the eventual feedback from the Contractor echoed this.John’s ability to undertake his own work whilst being sympathetic of everyone’s role in the design team, the client’s aspirations, and the contractor’s ability to undertake the build are the skills, I believe, that set him apart from some of his peers. Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend John for a similar scheme for one of my client’s due to my experience with him on this scheme.
