Loved everything about this place! Ferry ride across was interesting and the driver across was really friendly. The castle ruins were very interesting, and the beaches were fantastic. To crown it all there is a lovely pub on the island so we were able to enjoy a lovely pint of birra moretti in the sun outside!

We took the ferry over to the castle and spent the morning walking around. Its a great day trip with the boat then exploring the castle ruins. There is also a little pebble beach area that kept our 6 year old busy looking for shells and crabs. There is a pub on the island too.

Nice ruins and island to walk around. Boat comes every 15mins, probably need 30mins to walk around. Hetty can be slippery! There is a pub on the island

It was really great to explore such an old and interesting construction without any 'please do not touch' restrictions.Free entry to the castle + £5 return ferry-boat ride to & from the island which was facilitated by Piel Island ferries. The castle grounds are obviously routinely maintained and the area is safe however I would wonder how inclusive the experience would be for someone with accessibility requirements.

Great outdoor excursion for the whole family. Spend the day exploring the castle ruins and the whole island, spending time on the beach, but go in high tide so there actually is a beach since at low tide it's possible to walk to the mainland or Walney island with a guide at low tide. The ferry cost £5 per head and is regularly making trips back and forth. Check them on FB for the latest timings and updates as they will not run if the weather is bad. Search for Piel Ferry. Pay on the way to the island and seems to be cash only so come prepared.

Great place to visit for a day out. Ferryman knowledgeable and very helpful, also has a good sense of humour. The island and the castle were very interesting. Never found time to go to the pub this time.

Great spot to visit this 14th century Castle, alot of the structure still remains but from so early on, erosion of its sandstone construction with the elements of the coastal weather took its toll and sadly fell into decline around the late 1500's.While walking around the ruins, you can see just why the location was picked for this fortress, with views out across the bay you can see for miles, which from its 75 foot towers would have been a great vantage point while defending against the Pirates and the Scottish alike back in the day.Nowadays, it's a good backdrop for some photos, looking at wildlife including owls and a cool place to spot seal's from while they laze on the sand bank's - so have your binoculars at hand.

We especially enjoyed the visit as it was unexpected and superb weather. Short boat ferry trip (£6 return). Castle, pub a few houses. For us it was worth it.
