Alex Shimwell ceramics

Alex is a great teacher and very skilled at what he does. If you want to learn how to create pots on the wheel definitely give his classes a go!

Alex was recommended to me by the amazing Anna Mercedes Wear. I was looking for an inspirational tutor who would have the skill and patience to teach someone with my complete lack of natural ability. I’m now coming to end of my 4th set of courses and could not recommend Alex highly enough. In 6 months he has taken me from a complete beginner to the point where I can realistically start thinking about selling some of my work. This is well beyond my expectations. Alex teaches sound technique based in the science of clay that will scale to throwing bigger. If you want to learn a great throwing technique that will allow you to grow as, or into being, a professional potter, then Alex is the tutor you need.

All I can say is doing a pottery class with Alex is the perfect way to destress. And Alex is a great teacher - what he doesn't know....every question my class asked he had a full answer. His technical knowledge is second to none - I thought he'd studied chemistry, rather than ceramics! However, he is clearly talented and makes fabulous pots. Other than that he's fun, refreshingly honest and also supportive to help you improve. I'm looking forward to booking my next set of sessions.

Alex is a brilliant ceramic tutor, totally inspiring, I did a beginners course with him, we all really enjoyed his lessons, he always brought out the best in us all. I managed to create things, I never dreamt was possible and it opened up a whole load of new opportunities, I cannot thank him enough.

It's not just that Alex Shimwell makes nice pots; he also understands how to explain and demonstrate to his students how they too can also make nice pots. His tuition is very, and literally constructive!.
