Kyoto Shotokan Karate Club

We have been training here for a couple of months now, absolute beginners. What mattered to me when I looked for a martial arts class was that our entire family could train together rather than segregated by age; but since we started, we’ve come to appreciate so many more things about this club. Sensei Steve is patient, clear in his instructions and demonstrations, and will explain the practical application of moves so it all makes sense. He’s able to draw in all ages and encourage discipline while maintaining a friendly warmth.Would recommend to anyone interested in learning a traditional martial art.

Great Karate dojo! Family friendly, high standards of training and really affordable. Sensei Steve's passion about Karate is obvious, but also contagious. He is clear in his instructions, patient with us beginners, and all around an outstanding Sensei doing a great job at teaching traditional Shotokan Karate. The dojo also offers a lot of flexibility, and you can generally train up to 9 hours a week.I would definitely recommend it to anyone willing to discover traditional Karate.

The ClubAbsolutely brilliant class room environment for self development for all levels and ages. A family friendly dojo in which members promote the values of Shotokan karate in mixed classes. The Sensei ( teacher ) is traditional and knowledgeable in both practical and theoretical application. Encouraging and very supportive he constantly scrutinises students forms and technique and gives feedback in quick personal corrective examples or involves the whole class in elaborate use of the moves in simulated situations ( these are highly fascinating, generally ending with a quiet ah... so that's why it's like that " and can result in a good laugh. )My son and I have made friends. And even without class participation my wife has too.What is provided at this club is priceless and is absolutely value for money and I look forward to every class with excitement."

My children and I attend classes at the Kyoto Shotokan Karate club and we love being a part of this community! Sensei Steve is calm, patient and accomplished. He always demonstrates new moves several times and is constantly helping us to improve our practice, noticing our individual performance. I was a complete novice - had never even dreamed I'd do karate, let alone take my first two belt gradings! My children and I attend together in the same class - everyone is friendly and helpful. I definitely recommend!

The atmosphere is brilliant the lessons are made fun so the younger children can focus and the movements are broken down so you can understand alot easier if you are thinking about joing this karate club stop think and just join beacuse once you join you will be welcomed like a family and everyone helps everybody out

Joined the Dojo in February with my son and we are loving it. If you want to learn proper traditional Karate this is the club for you. The progress we have both made in less than a year, thanks to Sensei Steve, is sensational. It is our Karate family now and we are so happy that we joined. Oss

I have  been training in Shotokan karate for over four years and feel very lucky to have found such an excellent club.  Kyoto Shotokan karate club is run by Sensei Steve Ashby one of the most patient people I have ever met.  The club has members of all ages and abilities and with Steve's knowledge, dedication and superb training you see your technique and understanding improve. Highly recommended.

Best karate club I could've asked for! Besides having the opportunity to train along great people and learn from a great Sensei, you also feel like home! A great Karate club in Bristol, backed up by well established UK and International organisations. I have been practising Shotokan Karate for over 30 years, including coaching at different clubs. I was very happy when I found and was welcomed into Kyoto Shotokan Karate Club when I moved down to Bristol in late 2019. Steve runs a family friendly club rooted in traditional Shotokan Karate with a focus on high standards. Having trained with a number of clubs and organisations over the years, I was very impressed with the standards the juniors were achieving; this takes dedicated and committed coaching based on many years of experience to achieve this. It was also great getting some feedback to improve my own Karate. Unfortunately Covid-19 took me away from the Bristol area but I will return to train with Kyoto in the future. Thanks again Steve.

My son and daughter have been training at Kyoto since 2019 - throughout lockdown they was able to train online twice daily. I have recently joined them and the karate classes in Shirehampton and Lawrence Weston allow us to train several times a week when it's convenient for us - often 2-3 hours an evening. The detail and level of tuition we receive is phenomenal both at the club level and nationally.
