About the Business

Chester Weir and Salmon Leap, Chester, Cheshire | Educational Images | Historic England | This weir and former causeway stands across the River Dee. It was originally built in 1093 by Hugh Lupus, first Earl of Chester. It was built for St Werburgh's Benedictine Abbey (now Chester Cathedral). It channelled the water to allow it to power a series of mills along the Dee. These mills were amongst the largest and most valuable in England during the 13th century. They were in use until 1910. The weir was restored in the early 20th century to serve the City Council's hydro-electric power station, which operated between 1913 and 1939.

Lovely walk along the river Dee, the Weir was submerged due to high water levels.

Weird that spans the width of the River Dee. Interesting seeing all the birds dotted along the top of the weird, no doubtedly waiting for fish to come along.

This impressive weir is nearly a thousand years old! It was built in 1093 to provide water power for medieval corn mills along the riverbank. It can be viewed from the city walls but I got the closest and best view of it by crossing the Old Dee Bridge, then following the sign on the left that directs you to the salmon leap. Did not spot any salmon but saw lots of gulls and a couple of cormorants waiting on the rocks to catch any fish that came along. From here you can enjoy lovely tree-lined walks in both directions. There are benches and also a good pub close by.
