Student Roost - The Summit

This place is ok. The cons I had were in terms of cleanliness and hygiene. When I came the floor was dirty, the toilet was broken, and I had to spend my time with bugs. I thankfully had bleach and killed them but they kept coming so good luck if you stay here. The water is disgusting pretty much everywhere in the UK but the hard water here leaves white particles so bring a filter for your shower and tap. Neighbours are pretty loud and they smoke weed all the time (119 room). They did send ecolab to put traps in my room but they weren’t effective so I sleep every night with the fear that one might crawl on me. They said “the bugs are harmless”. I hope Ecolab and the Summit enjoy sleeping with these bugs too then if they’re so harmless. I did send emails mind you, but no deep cleaning has been done and no dehumidifier has been placed like the Ecolab worker said. Thankfully my fridge, microwave and stove work. I mean that’s bare minimum standards and so is hygiene. UK in general is very gross or I’m just extremely into cleaning. Here’s some harmless pictures for you :) oh and the fire alarm goes off consistently almost every other morning. Thankfully hasn’t happened at night. I’m also very lucky my mailbox isn’t broken or anything else isn’t broken because other people’s things are. I’ll put pictures here for that too don’t worry. I feel bad for the employees because they have to handle so many complaints and there’s no procedure or process taught to them. They’re probably not even paid enough.

While the staff are amazing and the location and large windows in the studios are nice, I have also had a lot of bad/gross experiences. I booked the Gold Studio and the only part that looked like the pictures when I moved in was the shape of the room. A broken table was laying in the middle of the room, the toilet seat was completely unattached and laying on the bathroom floor, there were sick stains on the mattress, the sink was clogged, I did not have any seating which was promised in my contract, the TV didn't work until November, and mold and dust was everywhere. Clearly, no one checked the room at all before I moved in, though the front desk and maintenance staff have always been quick to respond if I need any help. Once, I walked into the building and found a homeless man sleeping under the stairs and had to report it to the front desk who had to have the police remove him. Despite supposedly having security 24/7, no one has managed students partying/having loads of people over during the lockdown which puts all residents at risk of exposure. Unsafe and often unclean. I wouldn't live here if I had the chance to do it again.

It was unbearableLifts are constantly breakingHad multiple issues, my personal property was stolen and the receptionist was very unhelpful and unsympathetic when i emailed sulets i was forwarded onto student roost where they took no responsibility about helping with the issues i had throughout the entire year.Fire alarm constantly set off by people smoking in their rooms, when i complained about rubbish being left in the corridor and my neighbour smoking they did nothing.Laundry room lights dont work or machines always out of order, i complained with photo evidence and they turned me away and still did not fix the issueDo not live here over priced for the service you dont get

The Tower is a modern building but in the month i’ve lived here there has been problem after problem. there is absolutely no sort of communication at all and it is so difficult to just get basic things sorted. when i moved in, the flat has not been cleaned at all, i had to spend hours cleaning it myself, i was not told any sort of information regarding what to do if there was a fire, what to do or where to go and where any facilities are. i’ve been asking for a wardrobe pole for over a month and they have said several times they would sort it “same day” which never happened along with all of the other missing items. the flat was filthy, there are so many things missing which they have told me has been been logged but nothing has actually been sorted and there has been no communication. there are cockroaches in the hallways and it’s always way too warm or way too cold. there are hardly ever any staff in the office and every time i have been down to the office for help the stay is on lunch. would not recommend which is such a shame because otherwise it would be a lovely property :( the sad part is they reply saying to get in contact to talk about any issues but then it is so difficult to get them to answer the phone or even an email!

First year during the lockdowns in 2020/21, absolutely fine no issues. This year however, have had to complain at least twice a week about noise and music in the middle of the night from parties, have had constant fire alarm breakages/issues with constant high pitched noise throughout the day and night, now tonight has been the last straw. Suction/loud air noises in the corridor, that has been going on for 20 minutes straight since 2am, prevents the doors from opening properly which would be catastrophic and unsafe in an actual fire, not to mention how loud the suction noises are. Have had to contact via text email and eventually call to even get any response about this issue, and still nothing has been fixed with the noise, leaving me awake with this horrendous loud noise at 2am. Really really disappointed with this year's experience, considering how I had zero issues the first year.(Edit: they could not fix the issue after almost an hour so the best we had was a towel under the door and the other door forced open to stop the noise, have had to attempt to sleep with insane amount of noise)

In the summer the heat in my bedroom was unbearable, in the winter my room was freezing. I do not recommend living here for those reasons, when I say unbearable I really mean it.

Do not live here. This is my second year of living here, with my partner, and we both hate it. So many issues straight off. We were lied to and told the flat had been cleaned the day before we moved in, but it was not, and previous tenants clothes were left in the wardrobe still. Our heater in the room did not work and they lied to us, telling us all winter that it would be fixed, and then told us they couldn't fix it as soon as winter was over. We barley had 5 minutes of hot water, and they did not believe us for such a long time. Our windows let rain in if they are closed, but dont when they are open (weird and I'm not sure how it works). So all of our winter months were spent with cold showers, no heating, and our windows being open otherwise it flooded. We were told the day that we moved in that our flat would be painted, yet a year later and it still has not been painted. Any maintenance issues take about a month to be sorted unless you keep going down to ask about it daily, and then it might take only two weeks if you are lucky. There is an absolutely disgraceful amount of rubbish, which is the other tenants fault, and i have been told when i complained before that they can not do much about the bins as they dont have enough bins for the amount of rubbish, which is why it gets dumped Infront of the gate on the streets. There are HUGE rats, and you can hear them at night moving around. We once saw 4 rats in one bin. The laundry is expensive, but it is run by an external company. The 24 hour reception is defiantly not 24 hour. I went down to reception 4 times in one day to attempt to collect a parcel and no one was there.I would say that the safety of the building so far this year has improved compared to last year, but unfortunately everything else seems to have gotten worse. The only good things about living here is that it is close to DMU campus and lidl, and there are also cats who live in the house behind the building and they are cute. I would not recommend living here, and i personally do not think that the staff who work here would recommend living here either. They are clearly exhausted and i do feel bad for them, but at the same time we should not be paying to live in such a horrid place.

Do not stay in this accommodation, unhelpful staff, and everything in general is very poor, you will have a bad experience.

For the love of God, do not make the mistake I did and choose to live here. The time spent here has been filled with nothing but maintenance issues, incompetent management and constant fire alarms that will give you tinnitus. Unless you want to feel like you're living in a prison, and sharing 6 washing machines with HUNDREDS of other students - in which every wash and dry costs you £6 - go for it. But I can safely say living here is far more stress than it's worth. Reception staff will try to be as helpful as possible, but summit policies and systems basically restrict them from being able to help at all. Everyone at the Summit just feels trapped. Speaking to the receptionists, even they are aware that The Summit is the worst student roost site to work at and live at.
