Hawthorn Retreat - The Rowley Estates
Wonderful peace and quiet just outside of the Lakes. Even on a sunny bank holiday weekend, with the crowds down the road at Keswick and Ullswater, this was a pocket of calm. Lying in bed with the treetops at our feet and only the sound of the river was a wonderful antidote to the hordes elsewhere. The closeness to the A66 meant even Loweswater and Grasmere were reachable in 45 minutes, whilst Blencathra is right on the doorstep, and Penrith with its shops all 10-15 minutes drive away. The view from the field above the hut across to the Northern Pennines is truly wonderful. The hut itself is cosy but luxurious, with just enough space for two people and five days' luggage. If you don't mind being at a little remove from the lakes themselves, this is a perfect place for a romantic weekend.

We had a great stay at Hawthorn Retreat over the weekend. It was in a beautiful setting, so peaceful and quiet. The shepherd's hut was lovely inside and stocked with everything we could possibly need, the BBQ and fire pit were a great bonus. We definitely recommend a visit and hope to go back there some time!

Well what can I say! We had a truly fabulous weekend at yet another Rowley Estate property. As always they had thought of everything you could possibly want in a Shepherds Hut it’s certainly Glamping with a capital ‘G’ and Mother Nature provides a stunning backdrop. We had a walk to the Boot and Shoe in Greystoke and received a warm welcome then back to the hut for a BBQ (everything provided apart from the steaks & beer) and a fire pit with a plentiful supply of logs. The hamper was very useful so the shopping for the weekend was minimal and I popped down to Cranstons for the steaks and a few luxuries. Thanks to Christine and Charles Rowley for a perfect first glamping experience.

Had an amazing stay at Hawthorn Retreat, the shepherd's hut is very secluded on the river bank and you can hear the gentle flow of the river, so relaxing. The shepherd's hut has everything you need, was a treat to have kitchen roll, washing up liquid etc all provided and a lovely welcome hamper, which we enjoyed too..thank you! Beautiful area, nice local pub in Greystoke for evening meals. Short drive to Keswick and aira force, we did gowbarrow fell.We would definitely recommend Hawthorn Retreat and would love to return soon.

Hawthorn Retreat is a little slice of peace and quiet in the Lake District. We loved our 2-night stay there, it felt very secluded and private, like we were immersed in nature but still had little comforts like a hot shower / being able to cook breakfast and dinner easily etc. The shepherds hut has everything you would need, and the outdoor space is particularly nice and a lovely addition to the overall experience if the weather cooperates. We sat and read books in the sun in the morning and ate breakfast at the table with the calming sound of the running stream in the background. Would love to return here if we ever visit the Lake District again!

Wonderful stay at the Hawthorn Retreat. My partner and I stayed here for 6 nights. We were greeted with a lovely hamper and supplies including local cereals, bread, eggs, milk etc which was a lovely touch. The Shepard’s hut is secluded and peaceful. All of the amenities were perfect, including a comfortable bed, local shower gels/soaps, and well equipped kitchen so that we could make our own meals. We would absolutely recommend this to others and hope to return again in the future

I had the best time with my partner staying in one of the shepherds huts..It was very clean and cosy, we had all the tools we needed, things we didn't think of like corkscrews, scissors, cafetiere etc.On arrival we were greeted with a lovely hamper of local produce and a personal note regarding the stay.It was wonderfully peaceful, there's was loads to do in the area if you like a peaceful walk or a boat trip on Ullswater..Christine and the team were just a message away if we needed anything and she was quick to respond to any queries.

We had an lovely weekend stay at Hawthorn Retreat recently for our friends’ wedding. The hamper in the hut when we arrived was incredible, especially the Rowley jam (that and the loaf of bread barely lasted two days)! We had plenty of charcoal and wood for the barbecue and fire pit, and really enjoyed sitting outside for our dinner listening to the sound of the river in the gully below us. Super relaxing evening (only comment is that it would have been handy to have some tongs for the bbq, but we just used the spatula and literally EVERYTHING else we thought of or needed was there so no complaints here!). The cows in the field across from us deciding we needed a 4am dawn chorus on one of the days was particularly funny. We’d absolutely return if we’re back in the area. Can’t fault our stay at all!

A stunning location and fantastic accommodation. Completely off the grid and peaceful.A 15 minute walk or so takes you into the tiny village of Greystoke - a lovely little village.

A stunning and beautiful place, The Shephards Hut at Blencowe Estate.Set above the river, the Hut was amazing, everything you needed, comfortable bed, shower, hamper, fantastic. Sitting on the decking eating breakfast or with a glass of wine at night in front of the fire was beautiful.A truly get away from it all, no cars, noise, or crowds. The best place we've ever stayed in on holiday in the U.K. for over 30 years.Great base to explore the Lakes from you.If you want to stay in a Shephards Hut don't go anywhere else, these are exceptional.
