Selby Abbey
On our short visit to Selby we couldn't resist taking a peek into this famous and impressive abbey. It is a former Benedictine abbey and current Anglican parish church in the town. It was founded in 1069 and is obviously steeped in glorious, sometimes tragic English history. Suffice it to say that this is definitely a place to spend some time if you are interested in English, religious history and architecture. Wonderful.

Absolutely amazing. We took our scout group here for a tour around. All the people who worked there were so kind and helpful. We learnt loads about the history of the Abbey and Selby. We've been a few times now and we are always made to feel welcome when out if hours. Looking forward to returning soon. Thanks

A fantastic place set in the heart of the town. There are a few pay and display car parks nearby with a short walk to the abbey. Once there, it is free to wander round with a guide book or information panels dotted about. There is a cafe and toilets and a bit of a gift shop. If you feel up to it, you can book on a tower tour through the Eventbrite app and see the clock and bells. The climb up involves some narrow stairs and the last bit on to the roof is up a secure ladder but the view is fantastic

Beautiful building inside and out! Open to visitors, even during a service. Well worth the visit

This Parish Church was an Abbey and is remarkably complete. A fire in 1909 destroyed all the wood, except for the font cover pictured, and the south transept, but the replacements are of wonderful craftsmanship as shown by the reredos. The cafe isn't open on Sundays but it was on Thursday when we visited and makes a good refreshment stop. A must visit if you're near Selby.

Never been here before and very pleased like a lot of churches that I could go inside with my dog. The guides were very helpful. There is a cafe that is dog friendly as well. I gave a donation that would have gone to Beverley minster if I had got in with my dog

This is my second visit. The Abbey is striking from the outside with most beautiful stone work and carvings.Inside there is a really lovely atmosphere with friendly hosts and lots of information on display. Today, there was also a children’s choir rehearsing; very talented children! If you love history you’ll love this abbey from 1069; visit and find out about the links to the local area, who is St Germaine, what happened after the fire and why there are 2 tiny carved heads inside stone bosses.Take your time exploring the Abbey and remember to look up: look up at the stained glass windows and at the most amazing golden ceiling bosses.Entry is free and there is a cafe and gift shop too.I will definitely visit again.

With the fantastic York Minster not too far away, Selby Abbey could all to easily be overlooked, but is an absolute gem in its own right. Well worth a visit and is steeped in along and varied history. From lovely stone carving both inside and out, to the beautiful rood screen it's one that should be on everyone's to see list
