Rotten Row
Situated in Hyde Park, Rotten Row was established by William III at the end of the 17th century. William wanted a safer way to travel to St. James's Palace from Kensington Palace. This broad avenue was made through Hyde Park, lit with 300 oil lamps in 1690– the first artificially lit highway in Britain. The lighting was a precaution against highwaymen, who lurked in Hyde Park at the time.In the 18th century, Rotten Row became a popular meeting place for upper-class Londoners. It later became a bridal way 1876 and reconstructed with a brick base covered with sand.It runs parallel with South Carriage Drive, where people would do the same social thing in carriages.A real part of history, which you are surrounded by when in London, but often wouldn’t know it. If you didn’t do any research you may think it was just “dirt”... which would be a real shame and a missed opportunity. Luckily you managed to catch this post and can now conjure your imagination as you stroll through one of the royal parks...enjoy!
