This was the first stop on our whirlwind two days on Orkney a few summers ago. We raced there on the recommendation of the Tourist Information Office and weren't disappointed. Beautiful coastal scenery combined with the Viking remains provided a great location for a walk and picnic. As the island is only accessible at low tide, make sure you check the tide times in order to plan your visit.

Excellent location, Iron Age village on the island can be visited. Check tide times because the causeway is submerged at high water. Charges apply in summer Good parking facilities

A fantastic walk if you can time it with the low tide.

Stunning beach and clear water. Easy kayak launch. Thick kelp beds and scar rock if you're angling

One of the very few magical experiences that you can still enjoy for free - watching puffins! This area is accessible only during low tide; so you will need to first Google what time that is for the particular day. Crossing over to where the puffins are takes about 15-30 minutes. Take binoculars with you.

Superb tidal island which you can cross to 2.5 hours either side of low tide. Pretty lighthouse and friendly sheep

Accessible at low tide (check online for tide times). Plenty of sea birds in June incl a few puffins. Impressive lighthouse too.

Awesome place to visit. It was an extremely early low tide the day I went so there were no other people about. I saw a few puffins among the nesting birds on the north east side cliff face. Definitely worth the visit!
