Kinloss Abbbey

Gegründet wurde die Abtei im Jahre 1150 von König David I. Im Zeitablauf wurde die Abtei nicht nur zu einer der größten, sondern auch wohlhabendtsten religiösen Institutionen in Schottland. Ihr Ende erfolgte im Jahr 1601. Heute stehen von dem einstigen Gebäude nur noch Ruinen. Das Areal ist frei begehbar und kostet keinen Eintritt. Parkplätze sind ausreichend vorhanden. Auf dem Gelände der Abtei befindet sich heute ein Friedhof. Auf diesem befindet sich auch ein Bereich mit Kriegsgräbern aus dem 2. Weltkrieg.

The Abbey at Kinloss is ruinous but what remains gives some idea of the size of the place. The Abbey is signposted and there is limited parking. The Abbey and graveyard are in immaculate conditon. In this graveyard are many Commonwealth War Graves. During the Second World War there was a Royal Air Force(RAF) training base at Kinloss. It is quite moving to walk and take note of those who gave their lives. I left this place very humbled.

Fascinating and very special Abbey, mostly destroyed following the dissolution. Remained in use as a graveyard with a large war graves section from RAF Kinloss. We visited during Doors Open Days, so we were able to explore the Abbot’s house. This is being stabilised to enable long term access.

Worth a visit if you are in the area. Parking just outside.
