About the Business

Grosmont Castle | Cadw | Big on the border Grosmont is a member of an illustrious trio of strongholds. Along with Skenfrith and White Castle, it’s one of the ‘Three Castles of Gwent’ built by the Normans to control a key section of troublesome border country. The original earth-and-timber stronghold, build on a gros mont (French for ‘big hill’), was later replaced in stone.

Grosmont Castle
Very quiet, picturesque castle with fascinating history re. Huibert, Magna Carta era, Welsh uprisings the rise of the Lancaster household. It's a small ruin but plenty to see.

We've visited all Three Castles. Grosmont being the 3rd & our favourite. We parked in the most beautiful friendly village and walked up a very small distance towards the castle. Dog friendly with plenty of space for picnics.

Grosmont Castle
So gorgeous, we arrived after 4pm and were still able to access the gorgeous site. There is a black gate leading to a lovely bridge taking you to the castle. We had 1 dog and 2 children (5yrs & 10) They is a set of stairs taking you up, these has rail bars and our 5 Yr old was able to do it herself. Definitely worth a stop on your journey! The gate was not locked to get into the castle, we parked on the nearby road next to the church and walked the short distance up.

Brilliant place to visit! No allocated parking so have to find somewhere in the village but usually very quiet. Located adjacent to the village shop.

Grosmont Castle
One of the 3 Castles close to Abergavenny. Free entry. Parking in the village is limited then a short walk up a path and through a gate and across the bridge to the castle. No facilities on site except picnic tables. Beautiful castle with lovely views and well worth the visit. We did all 3. There are toilets in the village a pub and a small post office/shop. We went on a Monday and shop and pub were closed.

Another of the Gwent Tri Castles along with White Castle and Grosmont built upon earlier Norman fortifications by Hubert de Burgh and fortified harder under the reign of King Stephen. It’s set off from the beautiful village of Grosmont and does not have dedicated parking. On street parking abs a walk up a tarmac and cobbled lane to gain entry. Has a few areas to bring a picnic and is dog friendly. It does state that there are public toilets under the town hall but there is nothing on site. A lovely pub called The Angel is opposite where you can buy refreshments and food. Incredible views and consider visiting St Nicholas Church opposite.

Grosmont Castle
The smallest of three castles, but still worth a visit. It's easy to miss the turn in the village, but it's opposite the post office. There is some space and you can park on the road, which does have residents living there.

A great medieval castle to explore. With great history it is worth a visit. You will need to find somewhere to park and walk a short distance to get to the castle but worth an explore indeed. There are picnic tables so you could take lunch.

Grosmont Castle
Different to other ruins are you are able to walk inside more and can even climb up and look over the courtyard.Very large open grounds for a picnic but no dedicated parking. Was easy enough to park in the village but something to be aware of.Loads of places for kids to climb (where safe and allowed) and places to explore.
