Cowper and Newton Museum
A fascinating Georgian town house museum which tells you about the lives and relationships of 3 people; Cowper, an influential poet, Newton, a writer of hymns and Mary Unwin, a companion and carer. There is also information on the history of Olney. Two tranquil gardens to the rear of the property are excellent places to sit and relax.

Wonderful little museum, plenty to see. The volunteers were lovely and full of information. The gardens are full of old and interesting plants. As it is in an old house, not all of it is accessible for wheelchair users.

A truly interesting and inspiring museum staffed by really nice people, we had an awesome two hours, entrance price is very reasonable and gives you entry for 12 months, we will definitely return. The garden is very pleasant and surprisingly large but very well tended.

Fascinating. The house is atmospheric and homely even though it is a museum. The garden is very peaceful and I imagine very pretty in summer. It contains a tiny writer's room. The volunteers are friendly and knowledgeable. The shop sells cards and crafts by local artists .Enjoyed a visit again this summer. Please see photos below.

Lovely little museum run by most helpful and friendly volunteers. Lots to see and comprehensive information. Informal but interesting garden. Highly recommended. Town and river really worth exploring too.

A lovely little museum, with enough for adults and children...my kids loved it as there were felt hares to search for and 'children only' activities in each room. The gardens were not at there best due to the drought but, once again, there were hares to hunt for and the children enjoyed exploring.

Great museum about William Cowper and John Newton. Staff were helpful and very welcoming. Lace exhibition is interesting too. £8 for adults allows re entry for 1 year. Gardens were a bit past their best by the time we visited in early Sept but we hope to go back in the summer to see it at its best.

This is a wonderful place to visit and has reopened in safe conditions after lockdown. The heart of Olney: exquisite gardens, the Summer House where Cowper wrote his beautiful poetry, extensive collections of artefacts illustrating Georgian Olney and the history of these two fascinating men who wrote the Olney Hymns, poet and preacher dedicated to the cause of abolishing slavery.

My wife and I have driven through Olney many times but had never been to the Cowper and Newton Museum before. My first question - why is Cowper (pronounced Cooper) mentioned first? The museum is in Cowper's old house. The displays and information are outstanding. There is also information about John Newton, who was curate at Olney Church. The gardens are also excellent and include the Summer House, in which Cowper and Newton sat to talk. I'm so glad we got a ticket that enables return visits.
