Extraordinary to think that there's been a gateway here for nearly two thousand years! A plaque on the wall at medieval Bootham Bar marks the spot where one of the gates to the Roman fortress once stood. There's a café next to the arch and public toilets close by. Well worth climbing the flight of steps to walk along the most picturesque stretch of the city walls.
