Free House Studios, Bristol

I had the greatest time at Free House Studios, recording the soundtrack to my new theatre production. Such a brilliant, relaxed environment to be free and creative. Sam looked after us very well and was extremely accommodating to what was required. The results being a higher quality recording than I could of imagined. Sam has the patients of a saint and is uber skilled. Technical wiz! Overall a flawless experience and we shall be returning without a doubt, I couldn't recommend Free House & Sam Dyson more. Plus endless cracking cuppa's on tap, which made the stay even more delightful.

My Dad, Sisters and I spent the day at Free House Studios with Sam recording some stuff together as a family. Sam was amazing, really patient and put up with our dodgy taste in music! We had a great day and will remember it forever. Hopefully we'll return again in the future. Would definitely recommend to others.

Two thumbs up! I spent the day recording in Free house Studios and had an excellent experience. Sam gave a fantastic service and managed to produce the sound I was looking for. In particular I was looking to produce a unique vocal sound and the finished product is perfect. Sam knows his stuff and is clearly experienced. He has very good ear and his mixing of my track was spot on. He made me feel very relaxed and there was no hint of impatience as I recorded re take after retake trying to deliver the right expression. As well as understanding the right track mood I was looking for (which was had to explain), Sam added a lot of value but making many suggestions I hadn't considered. Considering the quality of the finished track, plus the service I received, the price was an absolute bargain! Thanks Sam, I'll be coming again!

Our band, Civil War Ghost, did a drum session here only a few days ago. I have say I'm honestly blown away. Sam, who runs the place (presumably) by himself, is an absolute pro who knows his gear, more importantly how to use it, and is so easy to get along with.We initially picked the place as it was a small, heavily deadened space that was ideal for recording drums. What surpassed all our expectations was Sam's vast array of knowledge, professionalism and patience. He got the sound of the drums so on point that we're likely to not even touch them that much, come mixing time! Such a great place. I would more than happily work with Sam again.

Very proficient - and Sam was able to jump from recording in Logic to ProTools at a moment's notice - just so I could have a compatible mix copy. In addition, Sam's final mastering made the tracks really stand out and become something more than just the sum of their parts. Great service. Would recommend highly.

Free House was incredibly welcoming and willing to put in as many hours as it took. Excellent value for money, and it goes without saying that a friendly attitude and the maintenance of enthusiasm (for basically a straight 48 hours) go a long way in making the whole enterprise fun and productive. Even the pre-mix sounded amazing and can't wait to hear the final result! Sam has a diverse knowledge of music and does his recordings well (drums fully mic'd up etc).

Band name: Simon Cooper Band.We recorded four tracks at Free House Studios and to be honest I cannot sing their praises highly enough. I've never had so much fun recording music before. Sam and Simon were brilliant. They made us feel completely at home in the studio for the two days we were there, and at the same time were very professional. They really know their stuff, and their passion for great recording shone through in the advice they had to give us at every step of the recording process. There were no massive delays or technical hitches" at all

The studio itself was perfect for recording a 4 piece band. While larger groups may struggle to cram in all at once, the resourceful and skilled engineer (Sam) would find a way to make it happen, and make it sound good too, as a band we were impressed by the quality from very early on in the recording process. All the in house equipment was good quality and what you should expect from studios with a much higher price tag.The initial mix sounded great, and the final tracks were mastered very well, the cost of which seemed justified by the quality we were given. 2 days recording and 1 mixing was just enough to get 3 tracks polished, however with more preparation another band might be able to manage 4. This deal worked very well for us.Overall our experience was very good, it was an enjoyable studio session and for the price far surpasses anything else we've experienced. We'd happily recommend Sam as an engineer and the studio to any group, and would definitely come back.

The studio is modest, but on being welcomed in and starting the recording we found it was thoroughly enjoyable. Sam was very understanding when mistakes were made and we had to start all over again: he calmly told us what to do and was very patient. The wait for the songs to be fine-tuned and finished wasn’t long and soon enough it was done. We took the disc home and listened. We recorded four pieces in total. Two of them were perfect and the other two not quite up to the same standard, although still good. So we emailed back asking if Sam could change some things for us and he happily did so at no extra cost! When the two pieces were finished the sound was great, as with the other two. We were very pleased with the outcome and recommend Sam and his studio. Tom + Neil

We spent a Sunday afternoon at free house studios recording our demo and had an absolute blast! We’d never recorded as a band before and it had been several years since any of us had recorded in other bands but Sam made us feel comfortable and welcome straight away. Sam understood our musical style as quickly as our sense of humour and when he wasn’t giving us his input on the track he was joining in on the banter and jokes. Sam was also able to figure out quick solutions to recording obstacles (such as whether to use a click or not) in order to make the most of our time in the studio and was more than happy to go back and tweak parts of the mix in the days that followed.We’ll definitely be going back to record future tracks and would recommend local artists do the same.Oh and sorry about breaking your mug Sam, we’ll bring you a new one next time!
