Tom Hawthorn Music

I recently started drum lessons with Tom and these have been really enjoyable so far. As an adult who is new to the drums, I have found it particularly helpful that Tom has made connections to previous bits of musical knowledge from learning other instruments. Tom is patient and encouraging and breaks down theory/skills into manageable chunks and makes time to get a bit smashy and have fun. I always come away from lessons feeling that my skills have developed and that I have a clear idea of what to practice and play with in-between lesson.

I've only started drum lessons about 3 months ago - at the age of 40 - so I am probably one of Tom's 'mature students'! But I know he teaches to a a variety of people, including professionals. Although it may be too late for me to make this a profession or career, Tom is very encouraging. He's a very skilled drummer and an excellent and patient teacher. I also really appreciate the fact that he's happy to help even after the lessons, if I have any questions while I am practicing at home. I am learning fast and having a lot of fun, and that's thanks to him! I strongly recommend Tom as a drum teacher for anyone at any level.

As someone who used to play 15 years ago but has decided to get back into drumming I've had a few lessons with Tom now to break old habits and form new ones.He has a fantastic approach to teaching and I have thoroughly enjoyed my lessons with him. I would highly recommend!

Tom is an excellent drum teacher. At the time of writing, I am a student at Leeds Conservatoire with a minor study in jazz drumming. To complement my studies I wanted assistance from an external drum tutor. Tom has been excellent at finding weaknesses in my playing, providing specific pointers and excersises to facilitate improvement, while also encouraging me to come up with excercises of my own and take deeper looks at the resources he introduces me to. My playing has come on leaps and bounds during my time studying with Tom, and I could not recommend him enough as a drum teacher!

Tom has been an excellent teacher for me.He is always patient even when it takes me ages to grasp a concept or technique.Tom always has several different ways to try and improve a particular technique so if I can’t manage one way, there’s always an alternative.Always very accommodating when booking lessons. He also massively simplified reading drum tabs for me and the different variations of fills became more obvious and attainable.Always leave a lesson with a smile on my face and the motivation and resolve to strive for better!

Tom has been teaching my 11 year old son drums for over a year now. He is warm, friendly and reliable and my son loves his weekly lessons. Tom has excellent drum and teaching skills and is highly professional and knowledgeable about all types of drumming. He is very encouraging towards my son and always makes him feel like his talents are recognised. The facilities are great and the classes are convenient for after school and holidays. There is no one I’d recommend more highly to teach drums!

Tom was my first ever drum teacher, with whom I had lessons from aged 14 to 19 – I'm now 27 and working as a professional musician, with Tom's influence being an integral part of my development. Not only did Tom provide me with everything I needed technically and musically in order to succeed, he was also a big inspiration for me as a young player – a teacher is a role model and Tom is most definitely an excellent one!I visited Tom for a lesson in late 2020 and thoroughly enjoyed linking back up with him again. The facilities at the studio are really impressive, and Tom is able to record what you play in lessons – critical in terms of analysing timing and touch on the instrument, and this record/playback system allows the student to hear what Tom is hearing.Tom is exceptionally patient and is able to explain instructions clearly and succinctly. Whether you're starting out, or are a seasoned pro in the game, you need lessons with Tom Hawthorn!

I can highly recommend Tom as a drum teacher. Not only is he a phenomenal drummer, but his pedagogical skills are also second to none. I had been struggling with a technique for over two years before I started working with Tom and he identified the issue straight away. Now I am making such quick progress and I feel I play even old songs I had been playing for years with much more commitment and purpose. His lessons are challenging and you leave every time with new ideas about how to improve your drumming as well as fun ideas to take to your drum kit. At the same time the lessons are fun and reaffirm my love for this instrument every time.

Tom has taught our son since he was 10 (he's now 16) and has been great throughout. He's a really patient teacher, but makes the whole thing really enjoyable. The set-up in his studio is amazing, and our son's drumming has developed hugely over the years. Can't recommend Tom highly enough.

Tom is a highly skilled drummer and an incredible teacher. His studio space is great too, allowing students to record and hear back what they're playing. I'd recommend him to anyone at any level.
